LAXMINARAYAN TEMPLE

LAXMINARAYAN TEMPLE

The 17th-century fort-temple known as the Lakshmi temple of Orchha, also known as Laxmi Narayan Mandir, is devoted to the Hindu goddess of wealth, Lakshmi. It is renowned for its large Chitrakala, which are vibrant murals that show scenes from Bundelkhand’s Hindu, Muslim, and British histories as well as Hindu tales.

The Lakshmi temple is situated along the banks of the Betwa River about a kilometre northwest of Orchha town, far from the fort and the monuments. It looks like another temple with its own fort as it stands far on a rocky mountaintop. There are cannon slots on the temple-fort’s roof. This construction represents an effort to safeguard this temple in light of the 16th to 19th centuries of Indian history, when Bundelkhand was frequently besieged and its temples stolen and destroyed.
