Alzheimer’s disease, the most common type of dementia, is a slowly progressive neurodegenerative condition. In Ayurveda, it is considered a type of Vataj-Manas vyadhi, seen in late middle age, and can be correlated with Jara janya Smrutibhramsa. Causes include an unwholesome diet (dominant in Tamas & Rajas) and irregular physical activities, leading to Dosha vitiation affecting both mind and body.
Clinical manifestations include loss of cognitive functioning (thinking, remembering, reasoning) and behavioral abilities.
Stages of Alzheimer’s disease:
- Early Stage: Forgetfulness, confusion.
- Middle Stage: Difficulty recalling, deepened confusion, sleep disorders.
- Late Stage: Difficulty speaking, self-reproach, distress.
Treatment
The holistic approach by integrating a salutary lifestyle, detoxification by Panchkarma, and integrative palliative medicine will prove effective in the management of Manas vyadhi with special reference to dementia and Alzheimer’s.
