BIRTH OF JHANSI

Brief Ancient History

The region of Jhansi, a part of Bundelkhand earlier, was the territory of Shabar, Kol, Kirat, Pulind and Nishad. JHANSI FORT

SYMBOLISES BRAVERY AND VALOUR

Located in the heart of Jhansi city, the Jhansi Fort was one of the most important centres of resistance to the British colonial rule during the Revolt of 1857. It is this aura that surrounds the grand fort that draws thousands of visitors to Jhansi each year.
Veer Singh built the Mauj Mahal inside the fort. From the Rajas of Orchha the fort passed to the Mughals and then back to the Bundelas.

Under the Maratha administration, Jhansi Fort was extensively enlarged. The original Mauj Mahal was expanded and called Panch Mahal, or Five- Storied Palace. In 1742 CE, the Subedari or Governorship of Jhansi was given to Naro Shanker, who along with the construction of other buildings, extended Jhansi Fort and added a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. This new extension was called Shankergarh.

AROUND JHANSI

Just beyond the Jhansi city, there is a string of fortresses which tell the story of the shifting political powers in the 18th and the 19th century. The most splendid among them is the fort of Samthar that was a seat of a powerful princely state till 1947. Near Samthar, lies the fort of Ammargarh, once the stronghold of the Naga Sanyasi Warrior Mahants, who controlled vast swathes of Bundelkhand, before their power was curtailed by Mahadji Scindia. Just beyond Samthar lies the Lohagarh Fort, that is immortalized in folksongs for its resistance to the British in 1857-58. Towards the east of Jhansi city, lie the two Bundela fortresses of Barua Sagar and Tahrauli, which are remnants of the numerous Bundela principalities that once dotted the region. To the south of Jhansi, there is a British-era Sukma Dukma Dam, built between 1905-1909, which is an engineering marvel due to a milelong tunnel that lies underneath the dam.
