JHANSI THE STATE OF VALOUR

Jhansi, one of the most vibrant cities in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, is steeped in history. Famously known for the heroics of Rani Laxmibai, the region is dotted with historical forts & monuments that date back to more than 1,500 years.

BIRTH OF JHANSI

Brief Ancient History

The origins of Jhansi can be traced back to ancient times when it was known as Balwantnagar. It was ruled by various dynasties over the centuries, including the Mauryas, the Guptas, and the Rajputs. In the 16th century, Jhansi came under the control of the Mughal Empire, and in the 17th century, it became a vassal state of the Maratha Empire.

THE FOUNDER

of Jhansi State

Jhansi was not founded by a single individual. It has a long and complex history, and the city has been ruled by various dynasties and empires over the centuries. In ancient times, the region was known as Balwantnagar and was ruled by various dynasties, including the Mauryas, the Guptas, and the Rajputs. In the 16th century, Jhansi came under the control of the Mughal Empire, and in the 17th century, it became a vassal state of the Maratha Empire.

JHANSI & THE BRITISH

In 1804, the British East India Company gained control of Jhansi through the Doctrine of Lapse, which was a policy used by the British to annex Indian states that did not have a male heir. However, in 1857, Rani Lakshmi Bai led a rebellion against British rule, and Jhansi became a center of the uprising. The Rani fought bravely against the British but ultimately died in battle.

JHANSI FORT

SYMBOLISES BRAVERY AND VALOUR

Located in the heart of Jhansi city, the Jhansi Fort was one of the most important centres of resistance to the British colonial rule during the Revolt of 1857. It is this aura that surrounds the grand fort that draws thousands of visitors to Jhansi each year.
Veer Singh built the Mauj Mahal inside the fort. From the Rajas of Orchha the fort passed to the Mughals and then back to the Bundelas.

Under the Maratha administration, Jhansi Fort was extensively enlarged. The original Mauj Mahal was expanded and called Panch Mahal, or Five- Storied Palace. In 1742 CE, the Subedari or Governorship of Jhansi was given to Naro Shanker, who along with the construction of other buildings, extended Jhansi Fort and added a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. This new extension was called Shankergarh.
