Vishada (Depression)

The symptoms of depression in Ayurveda include sadness, loss of enthusiasm, grief, frustration, lack of motivation, reduced interest in food, decreased speech and activity, sleeplessness, perspiration, tremors, fear, palpitations, and fatigue.

The treatment of psychological disorders in Ayurveda involves both internal and external methods, with a focus on satwavajaya chikitsa (psycho-behavioral therapy). Disorders caused by bodily doshas (vata, pitta, kapha) are treated mainly with drugs and secondary psycho-behavioral therapy. Disorders caused by both bodily and mental doshas are treated with equal emphasis on drugs and psycho-behavioral therapy. Disorders originating from mental doshas but presenting as physical illnesses are primarily treated with psycho-behavioral therapy, with drug therapy playing a secondary role.
